My sassy girl: movie review

I watched this movie during the South Korean movie watching phase, following a recommendation from a friend (dude, thanks :D ). And I watched this again, recently. I am not a sucker for romantic comedy movies, but this one is so special :) The romance is very subtle, nothing over the top, but yet, notches above what may be "normal", I guess that's why this movie is so appealing.

The movie is divided into Part 1, Part 2 and overtime. For the first two parts, fun and mischief are an integral part of almost every scene. The humour is quite cheeky. In the last part, things get deep and dope. Overtime will melt hearts made of stone, mark my words. There is quite a bit of philosophy here. The topics of fate, destiny, symbolism's, and letters are recurring, and that is very romantic, especially in this age bereft of reason (if you know anyone who writes letters in this age, cherish that). This is not a movie about instant gratification but rather something that has built over time. Do you know that there is something magical about visiting a place from your past, to see how you might have changed? It's true.

The chap is goofy, carefree, fun, selfless and so real (I guess he is a mechanical engineer :P). The gal is a tomboy first :) but deep within, she is vulnerable and trying to heal the pain, by putting up a facade of strength (a computer science chick? :P). This movie is about letting go (just let go, and get liberated), giving life another chance and about true friendship / love. Maybe this is about friendship which has caught fire.  There are missed chances, unsaid words and feelings, moments when you hope desperately. Then there is serendipity (what would life be, without this?). But, none of these seem to be over done. Things just fit so well. Even if you feel something is cliched, here it won't be, because everything is impeccable. The lead pair has played their parts to perfection. The music accompanies the scenes perfectly.

Fate , destiny?
Pachebel's Canon in D , one of my most favorite classical music pieces is used as background music in some really magical scenes, and the choice of this piece is befitting. This is a beautiful instance when images and sounds come together to form a brave new dimension :D This movie inspired remakes in many languages around the world, such was the movie's appeal. One can easily see why. The fact that this is a movie in a foreign tongue does nothing to sully what is being shown. The purity of feelings expressed does not fade, and that is the beauty.
A cliche, you say?

References to Terminator and the Matrix are very cool :) I believe there are two versions of the movie (or something like that, one with a few minutes of extra footage. So find out what you're watching. I have watched both, and both are so good. In this movie, I loved how there are many shots where the camera completes a semicircle, with the subject in focus. Gives such an interesting perspective of things. This is a movie which you can watch with good company (if they don't mind some puking scenes :P) many times.
:)

I guess, all I can say is, I feel fortunate to have been alive at this time of such great cinema :) I don't know how else to put this :) Enjoy the movie!

(Thanks for proofreading this, Kripa :) )

    1. Thank you, Ameya. Yes, you should surely watch this movie. Coming to devices used in the script, I guess the main things are the Tomboyish actress and docile actor, combined with the deeper layers of their characters ( masking pain? by an outward display of strength) keep things really interesting. Also, the element of hope, the symbol for which the tree stands for, these things leave the viewer yearning for things to be right.
