K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022) - Exhilaration is defined.

Image
THE most anticipated movie of all times is finally here. The movie gods showed mercy and bestowed upon us a feast for our senses, like water on parched lips. Like moth to flame, we sacrifice ourselves at the brilliance of it all. It would have been sacrilege to release this movie on OTT as systems such as IMAX were built because one day, movies such as KGF would be made. And I thank the makers for waiting it out and unleashing it in the theatres  🙏 . It is no small feat to hold out in an unpredictable world and I applaud the guts here.  Teaser .  Trailer . Like how you hesitate approaching the sunshine of your life in college, I didn't even watch the trailer till a few hours prior to experiencing the movie. True story. So sacred is the image in my brain. This movie is written and directed by  Prashanth Neel , cinematography is by  Bhuvan Gowda , art direction is by Shivakumar and music is by  Ravi Barsur . KGF2 The narration style is similar to that of Ch...

Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana: The silent anarchy

Image
When I saw the poster of this movie and saw that Raj B Shetty  RBS (as Shiva) and Rishab Shetty  (as Hari) were in the lead roles, I knew I had to watch it. As lady luck was in my favor, it was playing in a theater near me so off we went. Check out the  Official trailer  here.  Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva is the Hindu trinity, also called the trimurti. The Supreme Spirit or Universal Truth, called Brahman, is represented in three forms, each corresponding to one cosmic function: Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver) and Shiva (the transformer/destroyer). A child with an apocryphal past is taken up by a family who has a son of a similar age. This is the story about the evolving relationship between the boys of contrasting personalities who grow up to become gangsters. Most of the movie is shot around Mangaladevi temple, Kadri. and other locations in Mangalore city, India. The unique language, flavor and rich culture of the region have been distilled beau...

Seetharam Benoy: Case No. 1: Kannada Movie review: a slow burn thriller!

Image
To be frank, we watched this movie randomly, as it looked interesting. And we're glad we did! The movie is directed by Deviprasad Shetty sir and features  Vijay Raghavendra  (his 50th film), Ninasam Sreeharsha Gobhatt, Devi Prakash, Sathwik Hebbar and Bindu Raxidi. Bonus = there are 0 songs. Yes, that's right. This is a crime thriller involving cops and a serial killer, and another level of characters, which makes this story so innovative. The story and acting carries the movie all along. Source Initially this movie looked to be quite predictable. You'll be like "ok, I feel x and y is going to happen next:" and you might be right. This is the rabbit hole the narration wants to take us through. Vijay plays the thinking cop, who goes beyond the superficial and dives into the meta - level information which makes the story so good. He makes use of the resources available to him to the best possible extent.  When you feel you have everything figured out, you might ...

Ugramm: Kannada movie review

Image
Although I had heard of this movie from friends, I hadn't watched it for a long time. Not sure why. Ugramm (Furious) is a 2014 Indian Kannada gangster /action / thriller film directed by Prashanth Neel  sir and produced under the banner Inkfinite Pictures. There are a few familiar names from  KGF  here. This movie is about a reformed gangster who is left with no option but to harness his dark side, because of his principles and the prevailing situation. Source The movie begins on a serious note in the present day, introduces some of the main characters and then moves to a phase of attempted light - heartedness. I understand the reason behind this but in my opinion, if things were modified, the movie might have been unstoppable. I pretty much ignored this phase. After this, the pace picks up substantially, especially onto the second half where the real fun begins. It gets relentless and puts you on the edge of your seat as you proceed . Check out the movie trailer  he...

Act 1978 Kannada movie : A thought provoking drama which made me think a lot!

Image
This movie is an outlier. It has just one song. And the song is not thrust upon us like an unpleasant memory. It is a meaningful one penned by Kaikini sir, and talks about the common man and his resilience. Act 1978 depicts the path carved by the reaction of a pregnant widow ( Yajna Shetty as Geetha) and an old man who chooses not to speak. Their calculated crusade is against the unjust "system", the bureaucracy and stifling monotony of red tapism that infests our government offices. Me and you are too familiar with this plight, where money speaks and nothing happens without "influence" or "contacts". It is an honest depiction of a painful experience, a choice made by an individual devastated slowly by life and then by this blood - sucking machinery. Source This movie touches upon multiple topics extremely pertinent to this day and age. One I have spoken about above. The other is about the media, and how much of an influence they have over public sentimen...

ಕವಲುದಾರಿ (crossroads) Kannada movie review

Image
Kavaludaari is a investigation / crime thriller written and directed by Hemanth Rao  . Shyam ( Manish Rishi ) isn't content with his traffic police role and wants to move to investigation. His eagerness leads him to get involved and then obsessed with a 40 - year old case. As he digs through old case files, he begins to work with Kumar ( Achyuth Kumar  ) who owns an investigative newspaper and Muthanna (Industry legend  Anant Nag ) , a retired police officer who had investigated this case. This movie takes us through the investigation and the lives of those involved in it. I watched this movie as it was heavily recommended by wifey so top priority once again!  Image courtesy IMDB The introduction sequence where the characters names are shown is captivating, with it's innovative graphics. This is a visually - striking movie, and is superbly scored. Music ( Charan Raj ) was top - class, the highest quality, and contributes immensely to the feeling of the movie. Listen ...

Birbal: Kannada movie review

Image
Birbal, case No.1 ( written and directed by M G Srinivas ) : Finding Vajramuni is a legal thriller and the first part of the Birbal Trilogy. The second and third installments are yet to be released. I watched this movie as it was heavily recommended by wifey so naturally it became top priority in a very short time :P. We follow the investigation of an 8 - year old case which has been re-opened for some reason. The suspect has already spent 8 years in prison and is now out on parole. There is a lawyer and his 2 associates who begin to unravel the layers of this case. At each step they go down the rabbit hole and uncover bits of evidence and put together the pieces of the puzzle. Characters involved in the case are revealed, each bringing a new dimension, their motivations and sub plots.  image courtesy IMDB The topic here is framing of an innocent person which I think happens fairly often. There is a superb sequence in the movie when the suspect gets a call from an unknown...

Dia: Kannada movie review

Image
Dia is a intense movie which revolves around the life of a girl called Dia ( Kushee Ravi ). She is an introvert, and is madly attracted to a guy from her college, Rohit ( Dheekshith  Shetty). The movie follows Dia's life from this point onward, and takes us through the ups and downs that she experiences. It is about love and heartache, about pinning your hopes on something to get shattered and bruised again and again. Letting yourself go is the right way to live.  Like life, this movie can be complicated. Life runs on hope, a wise man had told me once, and I remembered this during the movie. Image courtesy IMDB I loved the portrayal of the insecurities which play out in your head when you're madly in love. Each sentence is analysed a thousand times, and all the possibilities are studied to death. You live each moment in your head a thousand times before it happens or doesn't happen at all. The dream is your reality. It is natural, and our tendency to...

ಕೆಂಡಸಂಪಿಗೆ - Kendasampige (golden magnolia) : Kannada movie review

Image
Kendasampige is a movie about the devious circle of money, greed and corruption which threatens to engulf innocent lovers. The movie revolves around the lead pair(  Vikky Varun  as Ravi and  Manvita Kamath as Gowri) when they get framed in a crime involving drugs, the influential and the police.  Prakash Belavadi  acts as the menacing DCP Suryakanth and  Rajesh Nataranga as ACP Purandar. Throughout the movie, the lead pair is on the run, and the police are chasing them. Watch the trailer here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrIQUpTEUWA&t=7s Image courtesy imdb I think the movie reflects the depraved and money - minded society in an apt way. We live in a time where money is worshiped, and the influencers are treated like Gods. Think about it - each of us is ultimately hustling for money. Can you imagine a society without the concept of money? What would you do then, how would you spend your time? Back to reality, the difference between...

Love mocktail: Kannada movie review

Image
This is a heartwarming movie about love in different stages of a guy's life. The storyline follows the journey of the protagonist, Adi ( Krishna/ Sunil Kumar N ) to Udupi. On the way, he ends up rescuing Aditi (Rachana Inder) from a bad situation. The movie spans their conversation, with Adi narrating his stories from school, college and corporate life to her. Image courtesy imdb The portrayal of infatuation to love as Adi moves from being a young boy, to a teenager and onward as a young man has been shown in a funny, candid and realistic way. I'm sure the section of school days will bring a smile and nostalgic recollections of warm memories to a lot of people. WWE cards, the numerous crushes, fooling around with girls, tuition, silly fights and best friends! Then we move to college . Adi is in love with another girl, and he experiences the dizzy, euphoric highs, crushing voids and thousand cuts that it brings. Even though his friends advise him against it, Adi goes to ...

K.G.F movie- A fantastic cinema experience!

Image
KGF. The abbreviation which we all learnt in school is now a magnum opus in Kannada (and dubbed in a few other languages as well) thanks to the dreams, dedication and hard work of this immensely talented visionary team. This is the first installment of what will be a 2 - part movie. This movie is written and directed by Prashanth Neel , cinematography is by Bhuvan Gowda , art direction is by Shivakumar and music is by Ravi Barsur . I do not want to bore anyone with numbers ( “ Money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end .” - Bob Marley) or this - versus that, but this is a big budget movie for the Kannada film industry, and justice has been done on each and every Rupee spent. The movie (fiction, not based on a real story) traces the origins and rise of the protagonist, played by Yash  and his destiny, which is intertwined with that of  KGF (Kolar gold fields - read the history of this place here ). Narra...
