Ugramm: Kannada movie review

Although I had heard of this movie from friends, I hadn't watched it for a long time. Not sure why. Ugramm (Furious) is a 2014 Indian Kannada gangster /action / thriller film directed by Prashanth Neel sir and produced under the banner Inkfinite Pictures. There are a few familiar names from KGF here. This movie is about a reformed gangster who is left with no option but to harness his dark side, because of his principles and the prevailing situation.

The movie begins on a serious note in the present day, introduces some of the main characters and then moves to a phase of attempted light - heartedness. I understand the reason behind this but in my opinion, if things were modified, the movie might have been unstoppable. I pretty much ignored this phase. After this, the pace picks up substantially, especially onto the second half where the real fun begins. It gets relentless and puts you on the edge of your seat as you proceed . Check out the movie trailer here. It's beautifully crafted and conveys the mood and tension of the movie perfectly.

Sri Murali (Agastha) is the star here. He carries the movie along superbly. He conveys a lot just with his eyes, and I was reminded of the movie "the man from nowhere". Powerful acting, punching dialogues. Sri Murali's role here will be remembered for decades.  Agastya's meteoric rise within the underworld ranks has been depicted insanely well. The narration is such that each and every dialogue is power - packed. There are no moments to catch your breath. Relentless. Check out a small sample here

Background story narration is simply mind - blowing!!!!! Especially the history of Mughor, narrated in pure Kannada. The picturization evoked awe and terror. You can watch this 20 times and not get bored. It has been depicted in such a riveting way.

Haripriya as Nitya (innocence & charm),  Atul Kulkarni as Dheera (eager to further his father's legacy). Thilak Shekar as Bala (rising gangster), Padmaja Rao (gangster's mother),  Avinash as Shivarudra (terrifying gangster boss) , Jai Jagadeesh as Prabhakara (in a tough spot) have done amazing work.

The kind of characters who portray the gangsters were terrifying!!! The casting department deserves applauds. They have done an amazing job by just rounding up these folks. I was more scared than when I watched KGF. True story. The intertwining of scenes and dialogues are masterful.

Ravi Barsur sir's music is amazing. From the background music to the songs, you can keep listening to his tunes. Listen to the title song here.

The power of the word, and the weightage behind a promise is measured in gold here. This is an awesome thing to remember / learn, especially in today's world. One big mistake I have done is to not have watched this movie in the theater. I'm sure I would have watched it minimum 5 times.

Mechanical engineers redemption: Dialogue of the century. Check it out here. Epic.

Not so good: Although the fight scenes are choreographed excellently, Too many cuts in the fight scenes leave the viewed disoriented. Also, I'm not a big fan of songs which may not add much to the storyline. If you allow me to nitpick, there are a couple of logical flaws in the story.

Watching Ugramm has elevated the expectations for the madly - anticipated KGF chapter 2 to a crescendo. I'm sure that there are many throughout the country watching ugramm and KGF chapter 1 multiple times until the Gods decide to besow us with KGF chapter 2. What say, folks? I was totally pumped after watching this movie. Check out the fans reactions and thoughts on Ugram to understand why this is a cult movie. This movie definitely deserves a pan - India release. It has the heart,  punch and substance, not like the artificially - inflated crassness that some movies pass as cinema, just because of the "money".
